I'm sure you remember that Alans did survive in the Notherth Caucasus and
are now called Ossetians. Here's a sample of their beautiful language (in

The vowels:     i - front-high-closed
                e - front-mid-closed
  i        u    a - center-low-open
  | y      |    =E6 - center-to-front low closed
  e        o    y - varying center-mid-closed to front-high-open
   \    =E6 /     o - back-mid-closed
    -----a      u - back-high-closed

u is also used for bilabial sonant. Stress is phrasal and falls on first
or second syllable (if first has weak vowel, y or =E6).

The consonants:

Stops: bilabial p b p', alveolar t d t', velar k g k', uvular h'
Single-focus affricates: alveolar c dz c'
Double-focus affricates: alveolar ch dzh ch'
Nasals: bilabial m, alveolar n
Single-focus fricatives: labiodental f v, uvular h g'
Double-focus fricatives: alveolar s z
Approximants: bilabial u, palatal j
Lateral: l
Trill: r

p' t' k' c' ch' are pharyngealized.
