Yep, hence Fr. _chef_ -> Spanish _jefe_ thru an intermediate _xefe_ (/Sefe/) So, earliest Fr -> Sp borrowings have ch:ch (I believe _hache_ "h", falls into that category), later borrowings have ch:j (chef=jefe), and still later borrowings have ch:ch again (chófer). Rather interesting pattern, methinks.
