        Certainly *using* Polari is a deliberate subculture
self-identification, but as far as I know Polari developed into its
role by absorbing vocabulary from other groups, most wonderfully
Lingua Franca (some day someone will explain to me this thing about
sailors and gay men).

        So, I don't think Polari is the result of a star chamber of
drag queens, theatre people and their admirers deciding they needed
their own language.
