Having been a gay man in the navy, let me just say that it's the
marines to watch out for, not the sailors. When I came out, a friend took
me to a local gay bar in Honolulu, and pointed out who was in the military
and what branch. Of the 400 or so people there (this is an exaggeration,
but the proportions are correct): 350 were military, and of that 350, 300
were marines. All the attention paid to proper dress code, cleanliness, and
getting buff, and it is fairly obvious that many gay men would go in there
(at least, the gay men that would join the military). I usually say that
they're looking for a few good men too (an ad for the Marines used to say
"looking for a few good men", for our international friends...)
