Isn't this simply a kind of semantic case marking system
(as opposed to syntactic marking systems), as described in the book "Ergativity"
by Dixon? I believe Matt Pearson's Tokana has a similar system.

ObMyOwnConlang: The first versions of my Rinya worked approximately the same as Tokana.
