Thanks for your interesting reply: I wouldn't dream of claiming that music
has only one purpose, but I think it has to have a 'vom Herz, zum Herz'
component. And use of 'soul' doesn't necessarily mean 'organised religion'.
Beethoven's 5th/7th/9th, for example, are not overtly religious, but can be
recognised as highly 'purposed' spiritually. I didn't intend the second
group of reasons to be separate, the point was that music has to do
something to the soul rather than just be 'produced sound'.
James, I didn't think you were a musicologist - so I wasn't getting at
you!;-)) I was just saying that it is legitimate in my view to find music
interesting, but that's not what makes it music, or lasting.
