I'd guess that 'leftenant' came from the /iw/ of 'lieutenant' (anglicised) becoming /iv/ and then /if/ by assimilation to the neighbouring /t/ or something smilar. Mike> > On the subject of French and lieutenant, where'd the /f/ come from in > > the Commonwealth pronunciation of it? >
