Rattlesnakes have been taken to be an American emblem from early on, even
featuring on some of the revolutionary flags against England, which is why I
suggested them.

I don't know how fine a distinction he is looking to make, but I'd suggest
one as in heraldry - that the different animals be visually distinct. A
Bactrian camel (two humps) is quite distinct in appearance (specifically
profile) from a Dromedary with one hump. The long hair of its wooly coat
I'd say isn't enough to make it distinct. So a grizzly bear versus a Kodiak
bear might not be a great distinction. But a raven versus a robin should be
just fine.
