I'm not. I hear [A] as /a/, [A:] as /a:/ (Americans generally have
length in their /A/, or more length then is in my /a/ at any rate, and
anything over the length of a short vowel sounds like a long vowel, even
if it's only a touch over) and [Ar\`] as /a:r\/, but generally recognise
them as /O/, /O/ (/a:/ or /o:/ when necessary) and /a:(r\)/ when an
American says them. And when its necessary to use an American accent,[1]
I can distinguish between the two in pronunciation. But the question is,
why would I want to make an effort to make such a revolting sound as
[r\`], especially one before a consonant? :P
[1]: this is far from a quality immitation, something like Windows 1.0
to early Macintosh, except that my normal OS in that analogy would be
like NeXTSTEP, only even better than even that. Or maybe OpenOffice.Org
vs Word, but I usually use LaTeX[2].
[2]: Ironically, in IPA with an American accent, _LaTeX_ should probably
be something like /lAtEx/.

Then 'Aussie' should be ["Azi].

I think you've misunderstood me. Just to clarify, my 'dude' is /du\wd/.
This is despite, rather than because of, its spelling. The spelling
suggestions /dZu\wd/, which also sounds like a woman's name to me,
though it could be spelt <dewd> or <jood> or others besides (except for
the fact that there's a correct spelling, being <Jude>). On the other
hand, 'tune' is pronounced /tSu\wn/.

Lol, but I'm happy enough to spell 'Aussie' and pronounce it /Ozi/.
