Hah! And when I was in lower school, our spelling book was printed in the
South and BOY was that obvious to Rhode Islanders. The book actually had
phonetic spellings like GRYN for 'grain!' I mean, you do expect annoying
News English forms, but that is like making everyone learn Rhode Island-ese
(car /k'a:/, youths /yuwts/, How are you? /ha:wa:y@?/). And yes, somehow
they also managed to refer to soda as 'pop' there, too, although god knows
that was probably the publisher's idea of multiculturalism.
