Like all major religions, Islam is split into various more or less
incompatible branches. The main branches are Sunna and Shi'a, the relations
between which have sometimes been of the crossed-swords-and-blazing-cannons
type. In the late 1500s, a Turkish Sunnite mufti declared that killing a
single Shi'ite is as pleasing to Allah as killing seventy Christians ...
The Iranian gov't is extremist Shi'ite, and the Taliban see themselves as
the imbodiment of true Sunnite Islam. Taliban repression of Afghan Shi'ites
haven't improved relations, as haven't the Taliban's murder of a dozen
Iranian diplomats at the fall of Mazar-i-Sharif (at which time there were
some specualtion that Iran might invade Afghanistan and forcibly removed the
Taliban, but they restricted themselves to diplomatical protests).
