I was taught America, Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania (basically everything
in the Pacific, east of Australia). Plus Antarctica as a late addition. It may
not be obvious to USAnians, but using "America" as a synonym for the
United States sounds less than nice to people who live south of the US,
though most of us don't consider that "stealing".
Curiously, "American" doesn't sound that bad standing for United-Statian,
but it does add an unpleasant twist to the Monroe doctrine.
