Sorry; should have thought before deciding to put tone
marks on my Chinese. 'Shanyu' and 'shaniu' were the
examples I used. Both are of the tone pattern
high-level / rising.

Yes, it was Big-5. Because I was too lazy to look up
the Unicode numbers, I basically copied and pasted
from NJStar, which encodes in Big-5. I sort of assumed
that it would be magically converted to UTF-8 by my
web browser, but on second thought, that was really
