I've usually tried to work out the sound changes first, too, in derived
conlangs. It can get tricky, though. One problem I've had in my Romance
conlang(s) is that certain words (such as Latin habere) require special
rules, if the language is to be comparable to actual Romance languages.

I have this problem, too. I tend to conclude that the actual language and
