But notation can influence pronunciation. English is full of examples
(though the only ones I can think of off the top of my head are 'join',
'Indian' (etc.), 'soldier', some pronunciations of 'accomplish', some
prounciations of 'azure',* and perhaps some words like 'admiral' and
'adventure').
* I hear it as /@Zu@/, which is why I found it odd that it'd be such a
popular example for the /Z/ sound till I checked dictionary; my /Zu/
generally corresponds to /z(j)u/ in other dialects.
