I, too, grew up in So. California, and pronounce it with the velar L as
p_hAl_Gm in isolation, but tend to slur the velar L to a velar approximant
M\ in casual speech: phAM\m. Hearing it without the l_G or an M\ also
sounds "lazy" to my ear.
