Where I grew up in Southern California among the palm trees the L was quite distinctly pronounced in "palm", even in casual speech. I can't imagine pronouncing it without the L. Just sounds "lazy" to my ears

I definitely group PALM with ALL, CLOTH and THOUGHT, but LOT? Boy, that vowel sound is WAY different in my neck of the woods. LOT goes with ON and F(A)THER, those three being utterly indistinguishable from each other. WOW, I never realized mouth noises could be so interesting! ;-) --gary
