Re: A Conlang Journal For The List ? ? ?

Dear All,

I understand the strongly pragmatic voice of Roger in this instance.
Veterans of the list would have a greater scope of the problems involved
in compiling a conlang journal, especially given past "failures". However,
might not some of these concerns be resolved?

Roger points out, quite rightly, that the list itself constitutes a sort
of journal. It would also be impossible to encapsulate the dynamism of the
list within a formally framed document. This said however, undoubtedly
there is a significant advantage in collating the often fragmentary,
interwoven streams of the list into a coherent publication. It seems to me
that so many fascinating thoughts and theories languish in relative
obscurity, or remain sadly un- or under- developed in the list's archives -
a situation which might be rectified by proper exposure. The list and a
journal would be COMPLEMENTARY rather than conflicting. Non ?

Therefore I would propose that "Linguae Ignotae" (a title kindly suggested
by Roger) :

(a) be a bi-annual or quarterly publication, which attempts to resume the
major concerns/topic/"streams" of the list (and to some degree, the
broader community) into a cohesive month-by-month overview (or whatever
format may be decided)

(b) (initially) be sourced wherever possible from the list itself, or
documents already available for publication (the likes of Henning or
Rosenfelder already have a large bodies of well respected work). Editing
and collating is far more efficient that constantly soliciting articles.

(c) be an accessible, concise, and generally enjoyable to read...blah blah
blah you all get the picture.

Anyway, the "rub" lies of course with CONTRIBUTION and TIME. In this
regard, it would be absolutely necessary that the journal be intensely
pragmatic in its approach.

:)
