I like the basic idea. One problem I can foresee would be the classic
penpal dilemma -- "Now that we've introduced ourselves, what do we talk
about?" Perhaps we could be semi-organized about this... If we suggested
a general topic of discussion, then people could state opinions and
ask/answer questions about the topic.
Actually, this sounds rather fun, now that I think about it. There could
be three pools: one for people wanting to discuss linguistic aspects of
their languages, one for people wanting to discuss concultural aspects, and
one for people wanting to discuss RL topics/chit-chat. If we had a
standing list of who belonged to which pool (and there's no reason why you
couldn't belong to more than one pool), then anyone interested in starting
up a conlang-to-conlang conversation could just e-mail someone in the same
pool and get going. Posting the final results after some set amount of
exchanges could be interesting to the list at large, as well.
Or else this could be too much organization for us timeliness-challenged
folk. ;)
But personally, I'd love to give it a try. I'd even volunteer to organize
the thing. :) Any takers?
