Yes, it was a samisen (I wonder if they make an electric version?). The mix of bluegrass and traditional Japanese styles was pretty cool. He even played a song that was a bit bluesy, singing in Japanese. The musician is Takeharu Kunimoto. Apparently he came out here from Japan to study bluegrass music. The show is Song Of The Mountains. The East Tennessee (=Knoxville) PBS station has it on every Saturday at 10:00PM, just before Austin City Limits. We also have a non-Commercial radio station, WDVX which I believe has a streaming version via the internet. http://www.songofthemountains.org/ http://www.wdvx.com/main.html
