That was a bad example. /pju/ -> /pilaw/ would be a better example. An
early sound change caused /kj/ -> [C] and /ki/ -> [Ci], so that previous
example is [Ca] -> [Cila:]. But, later sound changes created new
occurrences of [kj] and [ki], so that now /C/ is probably best analyzed
as a phoneme.
