Watch my reply-to--I have gmail. In the US: Usually if it's the mother's name they're trying to make a statement (i.e. feminists). Otherwise, the most common is the father's name or both hyphenated. In Iceland: Almost everyone keeps their own surname, and the children usually get the father's surname.
