OT: English: 'Drop me a line'

Hi!
This is a question mainly to L1 speakers of English: how is the idiom
'to drop s.o. a line' perceived by native speakers? Does it sound
cool? Or overly cool? What is the register and what is the situation
to use it and when should one not use it?
Background information: a while ago I got anonymous feedback for my
webpage which told me that I should not try to be cool by using the
above-mentioned idiom. But in fact, I wasn't -- I was just a poor user
of my L2 English. After considering removing all English content from
my webpage (not really :-))) I decided to take this criticism as a
compliment instead as my English seems to be good enough for people to
think that I know what I'm doing when I use it. :-Þ
Quite obviously, I don't! :-)
Bye,
Henrik
