If it is to be taught, it better be taught in a way that makes students
realize that knowing it can have some kind of benefit (perferably something
more substantial than passing tests, but even that would be a start).

I was taught the basic gramatical terms
(like "subject", "object", "noun", "perfect" etc) in Swedish tuition at least
three times during my primary and secondary education. I doubt they had stuck
at all hadn't I gone on to take German courses, which one simply couldn't
succeed in without learning these words. I, of course, eventually developed an
interesting in linguistics, and learnt alot of linguistic theory by myself,
but that's entirely non-representative. Most of my former classmates probably
don't remember what a verb is.
