Not an old priest, fairly young in fact - where he was born, I don't know.
Maybe he'd found the full trill carried better in a large church when
preaching; it's seems to be that trills, whether apical or uvular are good
at carrying over long distances.

I see - nothing in excess - the 'via media'.  Thinks: you're from Normandy
