I read of an argument given in the 17th (?) century for the spelling "quh" describing it as a "guttural" sound, "not like w at all". The Englishman then merely replied that "he understood his arguments, but his premise was Scottish, and therefore wrong" :-) -- "There's no such thing as 'cool'.
