I'm imaging what Tech last names would look like after being
"anglicized". VERY SCARY. (The common name Makonnen, of Ethiopian
origin, might be rendered McConan or something like that.)
Speaking of Irish names, my own last name is the result of a bad
English distortion of the original Gaeilge: _Mac an Mhaoir_ "Son of the
Major", I am told, is my "proper" surname. Another example is Phelan,
which comes from [Ó] Faolain. Why the "ph" and not "f"?
Not to mention you can have several spellings of the same name: Wier is
more often Weir, and I've seen Ware, Wear, Wire...
