The problem is that the sequence of changes in Spanish was

/dZ/ > /Z/
/Z/ > /S/
/S/ > /x/

If /tS/ > /S/ > /x/ but not /dZ/ > /Z/ > /S/ before that
the likely thing is /dZ/Z/ > /j/.
