I actually use something to the extent of [3R\_?\] or [3?\] or [@?\]...
possibly a final glottal stop, even. True, that probably makes it close to
[A], but the actual vowel part tends to be more front ~ central for me.
I haven't spoken much German at all in the last 5 or so years, however.
