Is it possible for someone to provide an interlinear of the German for
those of us who don't know German? The translation into English seems
to play around with the words and order, and I would like to know what
the original is like before I tried it.
New Zealand's anthem 'God defend New Zealand' is set as a petition
rather than a celebration. I used to think of it as dirgic until I hear
'Advance, Australia Fair', being sung. At least the NZ anthem sounds
that way because it was written in the Nineteenth Century! It has also
been translated into Maori. Unfortunately most Pakeha (New Zealanders
of European-descent) regard any use of Maori as capitulism. A shameful
state of affairs, in my opinion, as Maori is more attractive than
English as a sung language.
