There are two problems with that:
1) you soon run out of single letters
2) you run out of *meaningful* single letter abbreviations even sooner.
If V is "vowel" then you want the varnames for e.g.
"rounded vowel" and "front vowel" to be VR and VF.
And variable names should of course be begin with a $!
