Standard German <w> is /v/ except in the "-ow" ending on some Prussian
proper nouns (in which the <w> is silent).
Many Germans learning English have difficulty hearing the difference
between /v/ and /w/, even after they've learned to articulate /w/. So
during one phase of their acquisition process, they often get them
confused ("I'm wery vell, sank you!").
