A question for the other Brits on the list: has anyone other than myself
ever had an urge to invent more appropriate systems of transcription for the
various regional English accents? Trying to represent them accurately in
terms of standard English spelling (with reference to RP) seems patronising
and inaccurate to me. (What reminded me of this was the thought of writing
'like' in Michael's sentence as 'leikh'...)
Has anyone tried seriously to achieve this?
Jonathan.
