It doesn't in French at least, being completely synonym to the English
"invention". But it can be used in French to refer to some pathological
behaviours. Probably that's what she had in mind.

Of course not, his presence breaks her nice little theory (and he's
English, so not worth mentioning by a French scholar ;))) ).
