We had this discussion recently. I believe I was asking for help with
Zhyler.
Anyway, I'm bound to get this wrong, but there are four types of
verbs to consider here:
(1) Subject Raising Verbs: An example is "He seems to be good", which
could also be "It seems he's good".
(2) Exceptional Case Marking (ECM) Verbs: "I believe him to be a problem."
See also: "I believe there to be a problem."
(3) Subject Control Verbs: "I promised him to buy the cat food." (Also called
an Equi construction?)
(*I* am the one buying the cat food.)
(4) Object Control Verbs: "I persuaded him to buy the cat food."
(*He* is the one buying the cat food.)
I've checked around on the internet, so I'm now sure about these sentences.
For some references, check out these sites (*especially* the first one. I'm
going
to have to remember this site):
