Just a minor nit-- I think it has more to do with _how_ something is carried rather
than the nature of the thing carried.
Indonesian languages (like Tagalog, I'm sure) have verbs that mean basically:
--carry on the back (Bahasa In. bawa, which has evolved into the basic verb for 'carry, bring')
--carry in one hand
--carry dangling from the fingers
--carry on the hip (mainly a baby, but other things too)
--carry (something big/heavy, embraced with both arms) in front of one
--carry on a shoulder pole (over 1 shoulder)

There may be verbs (I don't know them; proto?) for 'carry in both hands' and maybe
'carry with a yoke/pole (across the shoulders)'
