Well, we have a different education system. You choose your specialty
when you enter the university (or perhaps after the first year, while
you take a number of compulsory courses, such as Latin and Introduction
to Linguistics). At our faculty (Philology), from the outset you choose
a 'division', and the exams you take depend on that choice. This choice
also restricts the number of departments you can choose later, often to
one. Technically, your choice of the specfic department happemns after
the first year. The real situation can vary.
For instance, if you choose Theoretical and Applied Linguistics (as I
did), you have no choice but to choose the respective department,
because the very essence of a choice of department is that you take a
number of compulsory courses taught there, and then a number of
additional ones. The courses taught at the 'division' are quite
incompartible with all the rest. The same holds true for, e. g., Slavic
or Classical Philology
If you choose Russian Language and Literature, on the other hand, you
have a very wide choice: Russian Language, Russian Literature, Russian
Literature (20th century), Foreign Literature, Russian Folklore.
If you study at the Foreign Philology department, you can have a
specialization in, AFAIR, Foreign Literature or one of the Linguistics
(English, French, German, Germanic, Romance, Ibero-Romance), depending
on the foreign language you study. AFAIR you can also choose these at
the Russian Language/Literature programme, provided you study the
necessary language (thus, if you're a Russian Lang/Lit student who
studies Swedish, the German Lingustics dept. will be unavailable as a
choice).
This is somewhat messy as an explanation, but then it's 3 o'clock AM.
The essence is that I'm taking a five-year linguistics programme.
