Actually the con/alt-orthography is intended to be as far as
possible supralectal. It easy for an American to learn as a
rule that _ý_ is read as //u// after an alveolar, but spelling
e.g. _nu_ should also be possible -- unless you aim at an international
audience. Hence also the preserved distinction between the
THOUGHT and LOT vowels, and the merging of FATHER with TRAP rather
than LOT! :)
