[peGo] sounds affected to me, like a frenchish pronunciation of "perro" (dog) rather than "pero" (but); well, I have actually heard L1 spanish speakers with that pronunciation. In my ears, however, english "better" and spanish "vera" sounds pretty much alike. The consonants are the same. sort of. The /e/ is right. It is between [e] and [E]. It is slightly more open in words like "perro", not quite an [E], and slightly more closed in words like "pero", but phonemically there is no difference. -- Carlos Th
