I'm afraid so. You are supposed to be allowed to write "à" for FATHER, but
that leaves you without a symbol when you need to indicate stressed
TRAP. I see no way to resolve the problem short of introducing "æ" and
destroying the a/á alternation in related words like "saniti/sán". (I
suppose I could introduce an accented "æ", using "a" only for FATHER and
"á" for THOUGHT, but as we all know accented "æ" is not easily found on a
computer...).
