What a great idea, and what a lovely expression!
From time to time, humans have intruded on, or been taken into, St.Martin's
Land where the Auleri live. Nearly always, we have struck them as "Old
before their time" and they have a special word for this type of person,
lambasu = "young-beard". Auleri men only develop beards towards the very end
of their lives and it is generally held that if a man's beard has grown long
it will soon be time to take his olabata ("long walk") - basically you take
a few close friends with you, go to sleep under the stars, and freely
surrender your life. Traditionally they would cover you with flowers, a
cultural pun on "olabata" (ol = long, ola = (opening) flower, and abata =
walk).
Looking forward to the next "idiom du jour!"
Mike
