Leanne Hinton at Berkeley was the big one for that.   Now, though, I think
the project has shifted gears.   What Leanne does now is she gives seminars
and how to revive a dead or nearly extinct language.   What happens is that
people who are interested who live in the various reservations all over
California come to these institutes and they learn how best to revive their
native language.   So rather than linguists documenting dying languages,
native speakers are reviving their own languages.   There should be a website
on it somewhere or other...   Huh.   I can't seem to find one.   It happens, 
though.
