Lovely article. Lots of interesting things on google, too (William
Shipley+Maidu). Going out to do salvage work on native languages used to be
standard procedure in California Univ. anthro/ling. depts.; I wonder if they
still do it. $$$$ IIRC the Smithsonian used to sponsor similar efforts,
perhaps still does. I never did it, but should have. (Well, it would beat
driving a taxi, though I never resorted to that either....)
