Oh my, long before the 70s! Youth, youth......:-) It may have come into use
during WW II.. In addition: "a friend of Mrs. Jones" (may pre-date
"Dorothy"), and (suitable for use around the office?) "a member of the
committee". IIRC from Havelock Ellis, in the 1890s or so, a red necktie was
a dead giveaway.
