IIRC it's from the gay liking for the incredibly camp musical "The Wizard
of Oz". FWIW a couple of months ago I was working backstage on props for a
local production of the Wizard. In one scene a load of munchkins unravel a
banner reading "DOROTHY IS OUR FRIEND". On the last night my boyf and I
relpaced it with a banner reading "WE ARE FRIENDS OF DOROTHY", whichgot
quite a laugh from the audience.

Also here in Bournemouth (the UK's 4th largest gay community) we have a
lesbian bar called Emz, an internet cafe called Dorothyz, a cabaret
restaurant called Rubyz and the local LGB advice and community centre is
called Over The Rainbow.
