Siyo!
My response is this: let us take painting as an
example. There are some for whom it is a hobby. They
may have trouble with stroke or perspective or what
have you, and they are aware of this, but they are
seeking a pastime. Others are more serious and paint
for art, concerning themselves with the details of
that art. Some of us are going to fall in one group
and some in the other. I think it is a great idea to
start developping schools of thought about conlanging,
but it doesn't help to intimidate those who are just
dipping their toe in as a hobby. That toe-dipper may
well be a Grandma Moses, and we don't want to
discourage that person--in due course the conlanger
will choose whether to pursue it as an art or to
simply maintain it as a hobby. I say this as someone
who at the moment is admittedly a hobbyist but who is
learning a lot along the way through this contact such
that I might be able someday to pursue this as art.
Approach me with advice, please! This is the only way
I'll learn. But understand that for the moment I'm a
hobbyist.
