Where have you been drinking? I've never paid for a beer with coins.
Possibly I think some of it is that even though they're worth almost the
same amount on the international marker, one USD still goes a lot
further than one AUD.
And, I just give change back. Usually when you buy something it costs
say $9.50, so give them a $20, 2x20c and a 10c. A net saving of two
coins and most places are pleased to get the change. But I don't tend to
this in pubs & bars.
(Also, yes, we do still have 5c coins. I almost never get them anymore
tho. They abolished them in New Zealand last year I think? --- I wish
we'd follow suit here. They're the most uselessly annoying thing
imaginable. If we got rid of the $5 at the same time, we would even have
a nice silver 10c/20c/50c gold $1/$2/$5 plastic $10/$20/$50(/$100) pattern.)
