Just so; the "p" is intrusive, and some spell it "Thomson".

Yup. It was damn near a Pinzon who "discovered" the New World:
if he'd known about the west winds, he could have sailed home in
the Pinta and grabbed all the credit, leaving Columbus to rot
on Hispaniola.
