Actually, that is not true.  Texas was a republic, but so were California
and Vermont and then there was the Free State of Franklin in Tennessee.  The
other state to which I assume you were referring is the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Texas WAS a republic fro longer tan the others though and could have
remained so if it had so chosen (California probably could have too.)
