Yes, sounds right to me. :-) I tend to think of it as a stop, but I
suppose in reality it's an affricate.

Not sure... seems to me that it's quite a big change though -- "g" and "k"
are velars, quite far back, but palato-alveolars are towards the front,
between the alveolars and the palatals. But then again, I know very little
about sound change, so perhaps this *is* a likely change?
